Got out early today for a couple of hours of hunting. Found a button deep in the woods along side a small stream. After some gentle cleaning, I could see that it was gilded, and featured an eagle. Some quick research makes me think that this is a Civil War era Federal GS coat button. I've never found one like this before up here in Massachusetts, so I'm pretty excited. If I have the ID wrong on this button, please let me know. I also came across the world's smallest lock. The penny is in the picture for size comparison. Thanks for taking a look. HH all.

I believe your id is right on .. however the amount of gilt still on it and the aftermarket loop through the shank I think it may have been a lost more recent than the war . But still an Awesome find . Congrats !

Thanks for the comments everyone.
Digger Dad- I hadn't considered the aftermarket loop. I think you may have a point there. Appreciate the feedback.

I've been trying to find a RI Civil War button for 5 years, with no luck. I have found WWI buttons, so it's not unreasonable to believe you can find Civil War buttons here in New England.
