My 10 year old son came to me today and asked if he could try one of my metal detectors, I told him sure. He got my DFX out and poor little guy could barely hold it, let alone swing it. I showed him how to use it, how to pinpoint and how to dig his target and left him to experiment on his own. He spent 30 minutes in the yard and only found a few pieces of can slaw. I told him to get in the car and I would take him somewhere he could find something. We headed to his elementary school playground and he detected for 15 minutes before we got rained out. He found 3 pennies, 1 nickel, 1 dime and 1 quarter then he gets a solid 10 on the VID, turned out he got his first ring. Made me so happy that he enjoyed himself. every time we have gone detecting he always headed straight for the playground and never took interest. He said he wants his own detector now so I will be in the market for something lighter than a DFX for him.

A Tesoro Compadre is 2.2 pounds, One knob with great discrimination, around $160 and LIFETIME WARRANTY. It's a great machine for kid or adult.

Bounty Hunter Jr, weighs 1.5 lbs. The discriminate on mine can reject copper cents and dimes and leave me just digging the quarters. Definitely kid sized though.

Thatโ€™s freaking awesome, congrats to the both of you. I wonder if a go-find would make a good detector for him since nowadays kids are really tech savvy.

I second Steve's suggestion of the Compadre - simple as they come, majorly capable, and easy entry for the bucks. He could use that for life and probably kick my butt all over the place.

I remember a few years back when my daughter was pretty young, I had a child's Bounty Hunter "Treasure Hunter". It didn't have an arm rest so I modified it with some wood and PVC. It worked great. 20180720_234502.jpg 20180720_234539.jpg

The Ace 250 is a great starter machine. Easy, reliable, finds good stuff, and weighs 2.7 lbs.

once a kid finds something "cool", they are hooked for the most part. you just have to allow for the fact that they tend to wear out quicker than you do plus have some drinks and snacks for them. always great to have something that brings you closer to the family. well done
