Friday a farmer called just as he finished deep ploughing one of our roman sites. We grid in spring, in stubble after harvest and realized we did a good job in spring with just nothing left we were after. Now it was a complete differend game. Farmer did a 20" plough because of the drought we had. Better chance for rain to soak in. I was busy yesterday and my buddy took home a good number of roman coins and a few fibulae coming off the main scatter.
Today we gridded further were well rewarded in the soft muddy soil.

20inch is unheard of over here, & nice the farmer contacted you, shows a good relationship.

Congrats on all the good finds & that bird brooch is a type I've never seen, very cool!

PS. Not sure what makes that Crispus Rare, looks a fairly common type to me. If your going by price, I think it was just a high quality one that people went mad on. There are some differences as well; Yours is a .STR, not a STR. and the shield is a different type. (therefore a variant of)

Great score Lu. Is that coin in such good shape because it was deep and below the fertilizer? Slacking off on the silver but that bird makes up for it! Good luck.

10 to 15" is common in this soil here. Sometimes they cut through the soil 30 to 40". No plough just kind of hooks to vent the ground.

The bird brooch is very unique. It matches the time frame of your early Saxon finds. Merowingan were the first Fanconian dynasty starting with the end of the Roman Empire here. Very little left from them.

I read a bit and the only connection i found is Bertha the daughter of the merowingan King Charibert, wich was married with Æthelberht King of Kent around 580. Not a big chance for Merowingan jewelry in UK. :dontknow:

Rare because every dug roman coin in this condition is kind of rare.
Just kidding. I have no find records available and the one in auction was the only one with shield i found close. Made me thinking this type is not a common type. Not sure why, but it looks Crispus coins are more common on your sites than on mine.

Thanks Tim, this coin is fresh up by the plough. Same with the AS, the biggest one of the set. They almost never have this fat shiny patina when found. Just soapy water and renaissance wax did the job.
