an identical one on the net is referred to as a fish scale measuring 0 to 24 lbs. I suppose it could be used to weigh anything within that weight range. I don't think the eagle necessarily means that it is military issue, but rather stamped on it make it 'official looking'

Were they using this to weigh gun powder or what?
Also found a couple of 3 ringers

Hi, Pocket Balance invented by Richard Salter in the UK in 1770. Used by shop and street traders in fruit and vegetables and fresh produce . Weighing up carrots to put in cannons ? TP

Nice find. I agree with Jewelerguy. There would have been a little hook on the bottom that you could put in the corner of a fish's mouth, or gill and weigh it. I had one many years ago, and they are still popular today. You could have used it to weigh almost anything you wanted though.

I remember my grandpa had an old brass scale like that in all his tackle gear and I would play with it by trying to pull it as far extended as I could thinking I was Superman. I believe I've seen reproductions of those sold in antique shops also. My guess is your scale would date more to the later 19th C, but it could be wrong.

Well there is a decent size creek nearby so i imagine they probably caught fish to eat.

Hi ,German Fishing Rebure Pocket Balance is far more accurate with number sequence from 0 to 1 to 2 not 1 to 4 .Your balance is for something quite heavier in weight.TP
