Finally found something cool!-UPDATED-it's a "Teething Bell"

Hunted a field behind my daughter's school this morning where the fair was held up until the fifties (I think). I was about to give up because after about 1 hour I had only found 1 new dime and a bunch of pull tabs when I got a very loud clear tone that was very deep. Recovered this at 8 inches. The inscription reads: Randy Nov. 28 1959. It's pretty heavy for it's size and I'm pretty sure it's silver, although there's no stamp. It does not open, so I can't call it a locket. Anyone have any ideas about what it could be? I'm guessing that the date is a birthday.

artemis,
that is very cool. Not sure what it could be - is it hollow? It might help to post a couple more pics, like view from bottom, and more closeups if you can use the macro on your camera. Nice find!

That is so pretty.....I wonder, does it look like it could have been made for a Christmas Tree ornament?

I'm not sure, but maybe it was a gift to the bride on a silver wedding anniversary. Just a guess. Nice find. HH Larry

Yes, it's hollow, and it can not be opened-although the ashes theory is intriguing, there is nothing inside it. It seems too large for someone to wear around their neck or on a charm bracelet and too small for a Christmas ornament. I was a little surprised that the date is that recent. It looks like a Victorian piece to me. I'm going with a gift for a new baby. I wonder when Thanksgiving fell in 1959..I'll have to check that out.

Re: Finally found something cool!-UPDATED! It's a Teething Bell

I went to a local, family owned jewelry store in the town where I live and showed my find to the owner who has been in business since 1954. She was able to tell me that the item is called a "Teething Bell", and that these were popular baby gifts from Victorian times. The silver probably felt good on tender gums because it was cool, and it was an easy thing to keep clean. The owner was very helpful because she had a lot of knowledge of the people in the community and told me that she was going to wrack her brains about who had a baby named Randy in the late 50's. The photo shows how the bell was attached to a hard plastic or mother of pearl ring to prevent it from being swallowed.
