This find is from Sundays hunt.

Traveled to a pounded Union camp, after only finding one 3 ring bullet on the camp site I decided to try my luck in the brier thicket nearby and good thing I did. After digging what i thought was a shell fragment I began searching for any large iron signals which paid off. The shell is a parrott and i suspect was fired from a Confederate gun due to activity in the area. The shell is now disarmed and as soon as i locate a replacement battery charger i will begin electrolysis. One of the pictures is the lead shot from inside the shell. Thanks for looking.

Heres an idea of the internals and the shot ive dug out so far, the asphaltum is like concrete so im hoping electrolysis helps to separate it

She's a beauty! I believe these were designed to explode in the air over the troops - raining down shrapnel on them. Truly terrifying weapons and still hard to believe such a war took place here on our own soil. My Grandma can still tell me stories of seeing the Civil War veterans walking around in the 1930's parades when they were still around albeit 80-90+ year old men. The war is still terrifyingly recent in the grand scheme of things.

Looks like a a 20 pound Parrott that was never fused. I dug one in Arkansas without the fuse.

I agree that the shell was probably not fused. It could have been fired without a fuse or dropped - and the sabot may suggest which.

Terrific find. I am still hoping to find a CW shell, but only one small engagement around here so not great chances to find one.

Keep swingin.

Congrats on the Parrott Shell find! I believe that a soaking in gasoline will soften the asphaltum and make it easier to remove. Asphaltum as well as Tar balls that developed from Tanker Ship oil spills washes up on a lot of Florida beaches all the time and we used gasoline to remove it from found collectible bottles and other items that washed up.

That's an awesome find! Good thing going into the briers! Make sure you find an older charger that you can manually select the settings. These new ones only turn on when connected to a battery. I bet it cleans up nice
