We went to the beach for a 4 day weekend and got time to do a little hunting. I went to 4 different beaches to try my luck. This early in the season with the cold weather there have not been many contributors to leave goodies for us to find. All of the beaches had sand add as part of a beach restoration late last summer so last year’s losses are under about 8 feet of sand in most places. Sometimes the sand brought in has shipwreck treasures and in this area usually has some WW2 ordinance. So I knew it wouldn’t be great but I was hoping I might get lucky.
I sent 2.5 hours at beach one and found 16 coins with a face value of $1.19. They had just taken down the snow fencing they use to keep the sand off the boardwalk and you could see the tracks from the heavy equipment they used to move the sand around so they covered up the stuff exposed by the wind blown sand and pushed the fresh finds around so the finds were less than normal.
I spent 2 hours at beach 2, a little used beach with private homes at ocean front. I found a painted rock as an eyeball find, a room key, a penny and a dime, and a nice pile of 20 MM obturator (traveling band) from WW2. Obturtator is made of brass and engages the rifling in the gun barrel. The rest of the projectile is too hard to engage the rifling.
I spent 2.5 hours at beach 3, a beach with a boardwalk and concessions so it gets more traffic. I found 14 coins with a face value of $.80, a large 4 ounce sinker, matching squashed pennies (one new drop and one that has been there long enough to get crusty) and a little bit of 20 MM obturator.
Beach 4 was the best beach and as part of this hunt I went to a small playground just off the beach. Most of the coins were found on the playground. I spent 10 hours here and found 213 coins with a a face value of $17.42 (including a 1956D Wheatley and a Sacagawea dollar), some 20 MM and 40 MM obturator, 4 junky earrings and 4 small pieces of silver. I did have more obturator, but while I was detecting a boy and his family came up to me and the young fellow, about 8 years old, told me he had a detector and asked about my finds. I showed him the ordinance and explained it and gave him some. He seemed really happy.
The silver pieces, unmarked but they did test positive as silver, look like someone cut them and was drilling holes in them to make jewelry of some kind. Not a great find, but silver is silver.
As always I was hoping for better finds. You always hope that next target will be an oldie or a real goodie, but I did well and did find some interesting stuff. Thanks for looking and may your coil lead you to good things.
