Hopefully all that academic stuff has paid off and proven some old stories have an element of truth after all!!! :)

Some Gold has finally seen the light of day and hopefully more to follow!!!

on the reverse side down at the bottom you have the sheep, that is the "order of the golden fleece", to the left of that is an odd looking "s". The S is the mint mark for Seville, which means the coin was minted in Spain. During that period of time, Spain was producing huge amounts of gold and silver from all over the new world and had several mints in South and Central America. Now I do not know what you are pursuing here with your find and the potential of your site, but for instance, a New World treasure ship should not have such a coin.

I understand where you are going with this and if true, there would likely not be much in the form of treasure on the ship. However, the ship could quite possibly be a treasure laden ship but the coin that BVI Hunter found may have actually been the property of the Captain, one of the crew or a passenger. If BVI Hunter has found any information as to the identity of the ship, that will likely tell whether it was laden with treasure or not!

Neither! I was scouting the ground for signs of past habitation (bottles, pottery etc) with my buddy and it was simply laying pretty much on the surface, barely visible :)

Thanks!!

So that would indicate that it came FROM Spain to where I found it, as opposed to being minted in the region I found it? Would it be unusual for this to happen? Would they bring currency from Spain to buy / trade etc? or just perhaps be in the possession of the crew?

I wonder how this affects my Wreck theory?

well let's look a little further....the coin is dated 1787 so when (assuming a ship wreck) did the ship go down? The coin does not show what i see as shipwreck effect but does show use wear. So the coin was most likely in circulation for let's say 10 years give or take. That brings us to 1797. Also the coin does not have to be associated with your find...it could be from anywhere. Your NEXT find will start to answer questions that this one poses.

Thanks!, makes sense!

I think that's the answer - I need to look for better collaborating evidence of the wreck, this could just be a coincidence??

The link shows a book about earthquakes??

An account of the U.S.S. Monongahela riding a tsunami is in there in 1867...

More about the effect of tsunami vs watercraft and nearshore structures at varied times in history.
Some major water sloshing causing damage and turbulence so to speak.

Just a little background (although not too much detail!!)

have been researching stories of a previous wreck salvors base on a (now) uninhabited small island. Its close to a reef so they used to sit and wait for ships to wreck, maybe entice them onto the reef with fires / lights maybe?
I've found lots of ships artifacts (on land and in the water) and evidence of some occupation and a story that kept repeating was that one particular ship wrecked, but the crew made it to ANOTHER close by island (maybe sensing what was about to happen?) and hid their loot - never to be found again!!

Gotta love a good sailors yarn, right? ! :)

Anyway.... coin was fond on the so called other island..... so the story continues...… :)

Wow. That provides a lot more context. So cool, didn't even connect the dots that you live in the BVI (hence your name). Good luck with this venture!

Congrats BVI, I think this is a wonderful submission. With all due respect, I'm banner inclined as well but, you're going to have to tell me the method of discovery/recovery. I don't care about the when or where but we owe the other banner recipients the how! Visual on the beach, found with a detector, handed you by a monkey wearing a fez or found in your grandpop's sock drawer? Please share a bit more?

Respects and best wishes!
