Unfortunately, my buddies coins look to have suffered the same fate.

Yes, these 'little nickels' are affectionately referred to as 'Fish-scales or Fishies', due to the fact that they resembled the scales of the cod fish.

"The Canadian five-cent silver coin (1858 – 1920), commonly called a nickel, is a coin worth five cents or one-twentieth of a Canadian dollar. It was patterned on the corresponding coin in the neighbouring United States. This denomination was introduced in 1858 as a small, thin sterling silver coin, that was colloquially known as a "fish scale," not a nickel. The larger base metal version made of nickel, and called a "nickel," was introduced as a Canadian coin in 1922, originally as 99.9% nickel metal."

I'd love to find Spanish silver some day here in Ontario, pepperj has been lucky that way this year.

Thanks for the suggestion buddy, but I just appreciate pepperj's generosity of letting me join him on his permissions.
I sure wish the 'Bunny Button' didn't have a push in the front though.
    Dave

    Thanks Randy.

Thanks for noticing this beautiful little button Cru, if you want it I'll mail it to you.
My only wish is that it didn't have the damage to the front.

    Here are some better pics,
    Dave
No need thanks, I only collect buttons I find - cheers

    Thanks for your post ARC.
It was a long day for sure... a 2hr drive from home to get to pepperj's house, then almost 8hrs of detecting.
I should've taken up this hobby when I was younger, because my knees were killing me for the next two days!

    Merci Denis.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder or in this case the guy who found it.

Thank you for the post and for your kind words washingtonian.
I'm one of those guys who loves making eyeball finds almost as much as detector finds.

Excellent finds, Dave, and I always enjoy your informative background histories of the items that you find!
Congrats on the 2 Cent piece! Maybe I need to come to Canada and hunt to find my first ...still diligently searching!

Thanks for your post and your interest Nick.
I'm certain young people today aren't aware of how varied our currencies used to be here in Canada.
Depending on how close these early homestead sites are in relation to the US/Canada border, will often dictate whether we find early US or Canadian coinage.

Personally, I love finding 'foreign' currency, mainly because it gives me the opportunity to research it's impact on our countries history. It also 'sounds different' then what I'm used to hearing.
I like to imagine what the journey must have been like for it to have been lost here in Canada.

Best of luck to you in finding yourself a 2-center... although I'd much rather find an early Connecticut Copper!
