Reminds me of a small handle. Easier to look at than that thing I found Saturday.

Does look like a drawer handle doesn't it? The kind of thing you might find on those cabinets with multiple drawers used by haberdashers, pharmacies and such. But... if attached to a drawer, is there space to get your fingers behind it?

For information, we have two places called 'Dalston'. One is a district of London with a consequent large population and the other is a village in Cumbria in the NW of England. The latter only had a population of 2,120 in 1801, rising to 3,023 in 1831 before declining (attributed in 1841 to depressed state of manufacturing and in 1861 to cotton mill fire and depressed state of hand-loom weaving) to 2,004 in 1891 and 1,631 in 1931 (the last census year before boundary changes).

I did a quick check and there do seem to have been several generations of Fidler family (not a particularly common name) living in the village through the 1800s. The only 'E. Fidler' I could find was Elizabeth, the wife of Robert Fidler. She was born in Scotland in c.1815 and he was born in the village in 1809. Robert's occupation was given as 'railway porter'. It's a big leap of faith, but might Robert have had a nameplate made for a trunk used by his wife?

Any chance it is an owners name for a hunting dog? Maybe was riveted on the collar.

Wow.. Thanks Red-Coat! That is some great research and information. I was coming up empty handed on my efforts. Much obliged!

I think it is too old to be a K9 tag, and to well made. It also has integral cast attachments.

Those cast attachments are part of the clue it went on leather, as they are the same as the leather rivets used at the time. (late 19th C)

I’m not claiming to have provided a solution here… only contributing some research facts that might help point to who ‘E Fidler’ might have been.

Did you mean this thread?:

http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/w...t-found-former-farmland-turned-city-park.html

If so, I’m not going to be of any help. I wouldn’t know a sawmill grunion-sprocket from a buckboard quottle-hoop. Hmmm.gif
