Went to a new spot today and found part of an epaulet, an eagle button, a spencer carbine casing and a spur. The spur is different from any I’ve found before, I think it’s Confederate, what are your thoughts?

They’re brass and do use iron rivets. Also the scaled back strap is held together with a piece of iron, I didn’t find that part today.

Very nice site you got there, work it hard. Does the Spencer casing have a head stamp? I have found a bunch at a CW and earlier site that have none and was thinking that these old Spencers had no headstamps, at least the early rimfires lacked them anyways.Your thoughts?

No head stamp on the casing, I’ve found quite a few of them and I’ve never seen one with a head stamp Villagenut. I don’t believe they were ever marked.

I think your spur is federal Model 1859 with the rowel busted off. That's a good link AARC posted!

I don’t think so, I’ve found several Union spurs of that pattern and they’re different from this one. But I appreciate your comment and thought, thank you.

Thank you and yes, I can’t wait to get back in there! By the way, Cannonballguy confirmed that the spur is Confederate on the What Is It Page.

You have some real nice finds there. Looks like you have a lot of good hunts in the future.

I believe your epaulet is actually part of a union shoulder scale. I’m no expert, but it looks right to me. I have found the turn keys for the shoulder scale, but never the scale itself. Congratulations, stay safe and keep swingin.

Thank you and yes, that’s exactly what it is tnt-hunter, it’s part of a Union shoulder scale/epaulet. Can’t wait to get back in there, with so many larger brass items still in the ground, I’m hoping for a plate.
