The Hill - Day 3 - Finished...

We are far from finished what we really need to cover on this field but we ran out of time as the crop is starting to show.
We started an hour early to try and beat the heavy rain but it came an hour earlier than forecast and cut our gridding time to only 3 hours. On a large area grid where finds are really spread out, it didn't give us the best opportunity but it was better than nothing.

3 Scrappies - 1 so shiny & smooth, pretty sure it was lost in the early Saxon period
16th C Buckle
2 Medieval Belt Mounts
2 6th C AD Saxon Wrist Clasps (1 pretty good one)
1816 Counterfeit Shilling (I've only had 3 others & all of them had no silver plating left, so this is by far my best example)

I’ve never thought about counterfeit coins from those days but now I bet the counterfeiters started the day after the original coin was released.
Im probably going to ask you questions for days on end, I just dont know were to start.

Yes, the oldest counterfeit I've found is a Celtic one from about 45BC.
Had a few Roman ones, couple of Saxon, Medieval Hammered, & modern.

Depends what metal work we are talking about. Your Copper Culture pre-dates our Bronze Age by a few thousands years.

You are right. I believe I read the native Indians were working copper 8,000 years ago.

You find lots and lots of old buttons and scrappies....and wondering what you do with them. I picture bucketsfull in your garage, but inquiring minds want to know.. lol. I wouldn't mind seeing a thread on how your displays look, but what about those scrappies and buttons?

All are sorted in the following ways:

Scrappies:
Album Coins (not technically scrappies, but just helps explain) - Some shared with landowners, the rest put away in albums.
Coin with some good details but not enough for the album - Put in a Roman Bowl & given away to kids or people when doing displays/historial talks
True Scrappies - very little detail at all - Put in a big plastic bin.

Buttons:
Sorted into trays as follows:
Livery Buttons (sorted by type)
Military Buttons (sorted by Regiment)
Govt Buttons/Hunts Buttons/Railways Buttons
Civilian Buttons of all periods, sorted by type.

Lastly the plain one-piece, plain tombac, 4 holed buttons all in a big plastic tub.

Thanks, for asking this question villagenut. I've been meaning to ask you the same thing Mr. CRUSADER....we all know how much work goes into cleaning, sorting, researching and storing our finds. They have literally taken over my basement. Awesome hunt, as usual...
