Romer & Company Sheild Padlock

I hunted a new park today and found this old sheild padlock. Man I wish this would have been in good shape. I found a similar one online and it's an amazing antique display piece. Its funny that I found this lock that's from the 1800s only about 3" deep. Was a loud signal and easy find but didn't find any other target that was old. Just a bunch of modern coins. If this park was hit many times I don't know how this was missed. What would be the best way to bring back that brass shine to it? A magnet doesn't stick anywhere on this thing. It's pure brass unless some internal parts.

So I decided to just sand this lock down to get to the shiny brass. It's just a broken old lock that I'd trash anyway so trying to shine it up and maybe display it. Now I'll use a really fine sandpaper on it and polish.

OMG you didn't sand it?! I would have started with Barkeeper's Friend and if that didn't work try Naval Jelly. Aluminum Jelly would be better than Naval Jelly but you can't seem to get it any more. Now you're going to have to step down to some fine grits. Please don't sand your finds. It's a beautiful lock you found there!

Ouch! Well you got the shiny on the lock. Brasso polish might of been an option. Cool lock find though, congrats

Brasso removes scratches from metal and plastic surfaces. ... When used properly, it is also safe to use on other surfaces, including CDs, glass and plastic. A small amount of the polish cleans the surface of the item and the product can even remove scratches. To remove those scratches, apply with a soft cloth.

I think it turned out fine just to be in display case. The one pic with all the scratches is after 220 grit sandpaper. The other is after 400 then 1500 grit. Smoothed down a lot of the scratches. Buff up with some Brasso and I'm done.
