Hello, could you provide documentation on KMI originally being KMA? I have see no info in the research I’ve done. I lived in Kentucky for many years just a stones throw from Lyndon where the Institute was. My hunch here is that we have a box plate from some other regiment or institute. As far as I know, KMI was always KMI since it’s founding in 1845.

Buckle boy that was what a local dealer had told me. Nothing that I had found myself. What I found was exactly what you had said.

have you reached out to O’Donnell about it? Obv a dealer doesn’t know what this is when there is no documentation of one, and it doesn’t exist in the recently published ID books for plates. Wonder why Hanover brass is making a reproduction when it’s not in the buckle books?? Maybe I’m missing something here. Just been blindsided by a relic I didn’t know existed after years researching Kentucky relics. Forgive the skepticism!

Buckleboy I will reach out to him. I did reach out to KMI alumni on their site and they were not aware of KMA. I received a response from Smokeythecat when I originally posted on the civil war forum. He had a book that gave me some info on it. I will attach it. I'm all about research and have searched to the end of the internet, ha. I haven't been able to actually look at the book he is referring to. Trust me I would hate it if I found a reproduction. The yard next to where I found it, I found a cast I button and a couple of mini balls. This is what steered me to it being civil war.

The only KMI buckles that I've seen on the internet were rectangular. The only oval type plates I've seen (KMI/KMA) are from reproduction sellers. And this may be a dumb question...why would a KMI/KMA Cadet have a cartridge box/plate? KMI was a "college" not a "unit".

I'll side with BB on the skepticism, he's well educated in Kentucky Military History.

Elvis, I just always knew that you were still with us. I also vote BANNER Find on this plate. Very nice and also very rare. I'm glad to see some great relics still being found and saved here in Georgia. Congrat's to you. This may very well be one of very few in existence. This would be most deserving of a center spot in your collection. Well Done from a fellow Georgian and relic hunter. Some times if you are interested I'll tell you of a story of a guy I used to hunt with that dug a pornographic brass plate from a trench in Chicamaugua. It was featured years ago in one of the relic hunting magazines. Again, Super Save on a Great artifact from the CW.

Check out a small log cabin gun store. Guns of Yesterday. They have been the 2 generations have a lot of stuff nailed to the walls from back when searching was easy

Thanks so much for your good spirited reply. All of this is in the quest to find out what it is you dug. I don't doubt that it is period, just not certain it's correctly attributed in the Kerksis book. Will be really cool to see what ODonnell says! If there is only one other one known then that is a VERY valuable plate my friend!

Would you be willing to post a photo of the Back of the plate please? That may help in the ID.
