To Quote a Quote "One BIG Button"

After a lot of research I was able to locate the site of the Draper Valley Academy which was established in Pulaski County Va. in 1873.

The Academy was located on 40 acres of land and was in operation before free county schools were opened.

Today I searched about 1/2 acrers and recovered a large button. The button appears to be made of brass and measures 1 1/2" across. Now that's big. There are no markings on the back of the button. A flower type pattern is on the front and the boarder around the button has small hearts. The button was found at 9".
Any help identifying the button would be appreciated.

You found a "Dandy Button." These were Colonial era. Late 1700's find there. NICE WORK!

Could it be off some kind of leather harness for a horse or something like that?

seger,

There is a shank on this button. A bridle rosette would've had a bar-type attachment on the back. I'm 100% certain it's a button. I've dug buttons just as big as this one from 1700's sites.

Here's one that was holed. You can see the place where the shank was broken off the back.

And here's a photo of one that's bigger than a Large Cent. (green disc to the left of the Half-Dime) There is a shank on the back of this one as well.

These are just the photos that I had at hand.

Nice old colonial button.
