I have been on a real lucky streak about gaining permission to hunt some old sites, I hunted a one room school the other day and had a ball with a Barber half as the big find of the day. While hunting that site I met a lady who was the historian for a local church and she told me that the church had been built in the early 1840's and where all the old structures had stood. She was kind enough to get me permission to detect the church grounds so I headed out Friday night after work. I decided to start in the area where she told me the parrishners would tie their horses up and that there had been an outbuilding there in years past, I figuired that this was a good starting point as maybe other people had detected this old church before but did not have this info available to them and maybe had overlooked this spot.I had just started to hunt , for maybe 15 minutes when I recieved a call from a buddy who needed my help, so I decided to come back in the morning when I had a little more time. As I started to leave I got a hard penny signal so I thought one more could'nt hurt and I ended up pulling this very nice 1867 Indian head out of about 10 inches. The following morning I arrived bright and early and decided to continue the grid I had started the night before and on my fourth pass I got a hard but deep dime signal on my X-Terra 70. After major excavation I sweept my pile of diggings and pulled the same signal again so with the pinpointer I pulled this tiny piece of silver out and thought at first it maybe a 3 cent piece. I took it to my truck and started pouring water on it and man was I surprised to see the lady in the chair! :o I was so excited I just jumped in the truck and came home. I'll go back later today when my nerves calm down lol

James Longacre was the chief engraver at the U.S. Mint during the 1850's. He used both upright 5's and slanted 5's in the date punches. This half dime was stuck using the slanted 5 digit. It may look like a 6 at first glance, but it is indeed an 1854 dated coin. The arrows at the date indicate a new weight standard. (1853)
It's a beauty. Great find!

Nice finds,

That half dime is a beauty. The 67 is a rare key date. That one has very little if any corrosion to.
