    SWEET...My first Cob!!!!!!! 1686 Carolus II Half-Reale

Well, I had just gotten done posting my finds from today below when I pulled out this little piece that I had forgotten about.

I was walking along eager but VERY patient for a great find, much in the same way as John Walter When, all of a sudden, the BEAU-TI-FUL Whites "treasure detecta" rang up as +75 BUT since I was tuned into the Civil War relics, minie balls and brass that I was hunting and SINCE this piece was small and fragile, I put it separate of the heavy lead bullets and kinda forgot about it...

    WELL,

I just pulled it out of my pocket and wiped the face with some soapy water and a CROSS is staring back at me!!!!!!!!!!! WOW, this is the Topper for sure.....and my first Spanish Half-Reale Cob!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've dug the milled ones but my first Hammered Spanish! Awesome is all I can say!....

Thanks Doug and Nana!!! I tell you, as far as I can tell, I think it is a Carlos II or III Late 1600s to Early 1700s 1/2 Reale. It looks to have the same backmark as this picture below (the one to the left) which is of a Carlos 8 Reale backmark. If you look at mine, you can make out the "CA" and part of the "L" on it.

MAN OH MAN! That's a GREAT FIND!

In terms of ID, I have a hunch that you should be looking at Cobs instead.  This one Ain't Milled...  Here's a similar cob example:

    http://www.coins-of-panama.com/cobs/aphr-2.html

Could also be a Lima coin...but I'm not a "cob guy."  Someone will have more info for you though soon...

And you're right about the denomination.  Half Real sized for sure.

You're in Old Tobacco Country there--and I have a hunch that the coin you found could break a century barrier even earlier than you thought...

Definitely looks like a cob because of the shape and metal. But I am no expert

If it was gold I would be thinking Escudo. Awesome find! Congratulations

Wow Sentinal .... You sure hit the jackpot on this one my friend. A Cob. I can only dream of finding one of those where I live. I guess I will have to suffer with mid to late 1700's Reales instead. You deserve this find and I sure am happy for you.

WAHOOOOOOOOOOO, Joshy Boy, what's up, brother?

I know for sure that John Walter would state, "Yup, yup, that's what I am after...1700s...1600s...anything super old...you know Colonial!!!!" I know for sure that Colonial Zoyboy would state, "Yup, yup, that's what I am after...1700s...1600s...anything super old...you know Colonial!!!!" Hmmmm...Colonial Zoyboy and John "Johnny" Walter would state exactly the same phrase, so could John Walter and Colonial Zoyboy be the same guy? Nope, we ain't the same fellers, but we both do have the same philosophy!

That cob is simply amazing, buddy! Now, get out there and find another one...RIGHT NOW!!!!!
