1912 Liberty Head Nickel

Not today but within the last week I found a 1912 liberty head nickel in my front yard! Some of the nickel (now a grey/green color) is still there but has flaked off around the edges, anyone with ideas on how to clean it up a bit more feel free to let me know, this was only cleaned with soap and water. Unfortunately the area that is holding the crud the best would be right where the mint mark is. Now I just might have to dig the whole yard!

Great find! Congratulations! How deep was it?

As far as cleaning it goes, this might be clean enough. Sometimes the more you clean a coin, the less valuable it becomes.

Olive oil and a Q-tip works great. Do not use anything abrasive.

Thanks! Oldest coin I've found so far...too bad it wasn't 1913 hahahaha, it was about 6 inches found with a couple more marbles...but it seems like no matter where I dig, there's a marble or two. The house was used as a school house in the early 1900's.

I clean old nickels with vinegar and salt, it only takes a minute or two, dissolve salt in vinegar put in the nickel and swirl it around a bit, the red color will slowly disapear. when you are happy with the color, rinse it with water and rub a little baking soda on it to nuetralize the vinegar. Works great

Check it for a mint mark. They made the D an S versions in 1912. Nice find.
