My July 4th "Cherry Bomb"

CW camp finds after 6 hours of serious sweat. The Cannon Ball was a nice suprise....not being a normal camp find. The stone ink and some buttons were recovered from a Hut I located, including the Blue porcelain one recovered in the hut sift, which I thought to be an interesting find.

Thanks for looking and Good Luck in your finds,
Dave

When I see artifacts like that I can almost hear the roar of the cannon and smell the smoke! Very interesting finds and a glimpse of the past you/we might otherwise never experience. Tremendous finds. Keep posting. JIM

Re: My July 4th "Cherry Bomb"

I am in the wrong state. Hard to find a place to hunt for CW relics and No gold nuggets to speak of. :( Great finds by the way. At least I don't have to lug cannon balls back to the truck, LOL

You don't know how many times I've said the same thing to my detecting buddy... We need to go somewhere else to find these things... LOL

Those are some excellent finds Dave...
How do you know if that cannon ball is explosive or not? Well other than the obvious... :D

Gold Digger, use this link. Left column click on field projectiles, then smoothbore. There's also a quick fuse in left column.http://civilwarartillery.com/
VA Dave, excellent finds! Love the cannonball and buttons. There's so many varieties that you can spend a lifetime looking for them.

Re: My July 4th "Cherry Bomb"

Wow thats cool, I've always wanted a cannon ball. I know where I might be able to find some but they are in that same area where there is a lot of explosives from an explossion of a ship in our harbour. So MDing there is not a good idea.

LOL Charles, it really was a lug too, I couldn't just shove it in my pocket like the rest. 2 hour hut dig and 4 hours of surface hunting, to add the blistering heat, it was a lug.....of Joy ;D

Thanks for your interest Gold Digger.....this Ball has no fuse and definitely is solid, its very heavy. The solid shots were used to penatrate barriers such as stone walls, Ironclads, forts etc. There is a peculiar rock mass upon one of the hilltops, maybe a fort or cannon bunker was placed there.
Thanks again everyone, and Good Luck in your Digs,
Dave

Thanks Jake,
Its a 4.50 inch 12 Pounder, and today I dug another piece at the same site that ties to the Artillery....Letter "A" Hat piece. The recovered relics, lanscape, and other factors are telling a different story than my research. To be continued......

Re: My July 4th "Cherry Bomb"

Is this place protected (state/fed park)? Great research, I cant for the life of me think that you are at a battle site that isn't restricted. Are there such places? Everything around here is a stinking state park. (I shouldn't say stinking, because not everyone takes care of these places and I guess someone has to protect them.)

Nice cw stuff. That stuff is neat to own. Would like to do some civil war hunting here in the future. There's alot of places in P.a to look. Just need more travel time to find it. Keep hunting that site. Looks like just the beginning.
