Salesman's Medal

Well here is my find of today. An En-ar-co Oil salesman's medal.

I thought when I first dug it that it was a military or boy scout medal. I rinsed it off at my car and
didn't recognize the oil but I thought what it said on the back was very interesting.

I looked it up when I got home and see that this symbol was used by the company between 1910 and 1921.
The white is enamel but the protective coating or the glaze that they usually put on enamel has come off
over time in the ground. Pretty interesting what it says on the back about trying to sell 5,000,000 gallons
of oil when there weren't a lot of cars then (maybe just 'hit-and-miss' engines were their big market).
To me the Indian Heads and really old Wheat Pennys I found today just don't stack up to this.
