I know a lot of you make your own digging tools so I thought I'd show mine. Actually it was originally supposed to be an adz like the pioneers used to make bowls . It was made by some of my students as a project in their welding class. They made the adz and I made the handle out of a piece of hickory. When I got into MDing, I needed something to dig with so I decided to give the adz a try. As it turned out, it does great. It cuts a half moon in no time and scoops the dirt out at the same time.

Most of the time I just have it my hand as I go. I also wear a cheap tool belt I bought at Tractor Supply that has a open ring on it like you'd carry a hammer in. I don't like to carry it there because it pulls the belt down.
