Well just finished building a scoop used a 4 inch pvc pipe with a 1/2 inch galvanized pipe (think it is over kill way heavy) and made a screen basket for it. Here are some pics. It ain't pretty but should work until I get enough funds for a bought one.

you might want to bevel the digging edge, to make it dig a little easier

Thank you and I did the bevel after your post and your right did dig better lol

you also might consider building one with smaller holes in the mesh to retrieve earrings and the like. JMO

I'm not really sure, because if it's too small, damp sand won't go through, maybe 1/8 inch or 3/16 inch
