Well, herad the ship story and saw clippings and stories of following a tributary to the Salton Sea area that later dryed up and stuck the ship in a rapidly drying salt marsh.
The camels were brought to Texas as an army project in 1856 and put at Camp Verde, about 40 miles from San Antonio. Horses, mules and men hated them, but they were used on expeditions west toward California and down toward Mexico.. When war broke out in 1861, Confederate forces took the camp and used the 80 some odd camels here and in New Mexico and the west. A couple got free and flourished out there, some were turned loose and of the 66 left at the camp, some were sold, some released and according to Texas History some were shot when the Federal forces returned.. Stories from Arizona and California relate camels out there up through the 1880's. Today, Camp Verde is on private property, a chain bars the way in, the Camp Verde General Store is right across the road on former Camp Property and you can stand at that chain across the road and take pics. Nothing really left to see. Even though I was a college prof, couldn't get permission to detect years ago, but guy took me across the road, under the chain and we walked the property. He pointed out where things had stood and we read the Historical Marker that the state had posted. General Store is rustic and cool today. Tourist destination and local store...
