Weapon Is One Supposed to Have Been Buried. With Treasure Stolen From Overland Stage in Portneuf Canyon in 1869.

FRIDAY, APRIL 10, 1909.–John Hansen, who has been in this part of the country since shortly after Jake Fritz finished Snake River Canyon, says that there is no need to hunt for the Portneuf Treasure in Jeff Rauch's field. That famous bag of gold was thought to be buried somewhere near the City of Rocks over in Cassia County; but Rauch's alfalfa ought not to be molested by hunting for it there.
The town of Hansen was thrown into a state of excitement on learning that T. J. Ranch had unearthed an old shotgun while plowing his field, just east of town. Many guesses were made as to how the gun came to be there. Among them, the most prominent and most reasonable, is that it is one of the guns buried with the treasure stolen from the Overland Stage in Portneuf canyon in 1869. It is known that the stage robbers came through this part of the country while trying, to escape the pursuing posse. And, many a shovel will be kept, bright, (on the sly) in Ranch's field during the summer, digging for the lost, treasure which is said to amount to about $l60,000! At this writing, the old gun has not been sufficiently cleaned up to learn the manufacturer's name, but we will report on that part of the story later.
