Sweet! Go get the rest!
I've read a lot of stories in the Philadelphia area in old newspapers or legends of someone getting robbed and the bandits stashed the loot. On top of finding the loot if you can trace it back to a newspaper article about the robbery that would be awesome! Other possibility is it was someones hiding spot from looters.

The article said that the man who found it was digging roots. There is a good chance he was in a nearby mountain or ridge digging for medicinal/ginseng roots, which more than likely would be found in the mountain or on a ridge. Usually you will find ginseng roots growing well on a north facing ridge or mountain. Anyone happen to know where "Hunter's Woods" would have been?

Great detective work, Jeff! Your links are coming as invalid for me, but the story may well be just what someone needed to pin this thing down! Wish I were closer!
