An inaccuracy in reputed amount.
It was not there to start with.
What money?
How much will it cost for you to not speak of this issue?.
Bank statements showed insolvency (sorry records lost, accidentally destroyed,ect.).
:dontknow:

Hello All

It was not billions sadly but it seems there was money unccounted for? A good friend of mine did a little research on this topic some time ago.

493px-TimofeyevLetter.jpg

There was three high ranking Temple member survivors who claimed they were given an assignment and thereby escaped death. Brothers Tim and Mike Carter, 30 years old and 20 years old respectively, and Mike Prokes, 31,

They were given luggage containing $550,000 US currency, $130,000 in Guyanese currency and an envelope, which they were told to deliver to Guyana?s Soviet Embassy, in Georgetown. The envelope contained two passports and three instructional letters, the first of which was to Feodor Timofeyev of the Embassy of the Soviet Union in Guyana, stating:

Dear Comrade Timofeyev,

The following is a letter of instructions regarding all of our assets that we want to leave to the Communist Party of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Enclosed in this letter are letters which instruct the banks to send the cashiers checks to you. I am doing this on behalf of Peoples Temple because we, as communists, want our money to be of benefit for help to oppressed peoples all over the world, or in any way that your decision-making body sees fit.

The letters included listed accounts with balances totaling in excess of $7.3 million to be transferred to the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

The Carters and Prokes soon ditched most of the money and were apprehended heading for the Temple boat (Cudjo) at Kaituma. It is unknown how they were supposed to reach Georgetown, 150 miles (240 km) away, since the boat had been sent away by Temple leadership earlier that day.

To this day the money they ditched has not been recovered. As with other assets because at one time the cult had over 26 million dollars.

Today Jonestown is an overgrown jungle with most of the houses and building materials looted by the locals.

Not to much. just standard responses chasing a cut up pie.
Some accounts suggested multiple forces at play and premeditated murder and looting of peoples temple and accounts.
Would like the truth from first doctor(s) on scene.

Hello cw0909

A good post for anyone wanting to search more on the topic. There is an interesting documentary about the leader Jim Jones on a television show called "As it happened."

I get the feeling in my gut that this might be one to leave alone . Might be enough $ involved to cause the demise of too curious an individual . :dontknow:

Hello Truckinbutch.

Personally I suspect any missing assets are long gone by surviving high ranking cult members. As for a cause for ones demise I have many more causes for mine. As I have grown older I realised pleasing everyone is impossible. But pissing everyone off a piece of cake!:laughing7:

:hello2: I like that attitude in an individual , carry it myself . Some folks are just too sensitive to deal with people of our age/lifestyle . Many I deal with even fail to understand when I instruct them to go piss up a rope .

Hello truckinbutch

I am just a left over from the 2oth century where some ones word was their honor and not just empty words I hear from some of the next gerneration. I got asked once by some one what university did you go to? I replied the University of hard Knocks, They replied wheres that? I replied you will one day know that when you graduate from there.

years ago , right after the Jonestown deaths I ran into a guy that said he had lived there before all the problems. the story he told was about gold and how they we sent into the jungle to mine for gold. they used sluices and rockers to get the gold and bring back to Jonestown. you know how stories go. doing a little research I found that there is gold in the area Jonestown so you just never know what is true.

Hello Bill

It could be quite possible that gold could be found around the region near Jonestown. However I think most of the gold Jim Jones found was in the pockets of the poor, the disillusioned and the fringe dwellers of Society to buy into his fatally fractured dream of an Egalitarian Society.

914(?) people died there . Recovered assets , by some reports , totaled 10 million of an estimated(?) 50 million to as much as 2 billion USD . Where did the rest of the money go ?
I know this is an old thread, Im also an old member here, just havnt been able to post for a few years, lol, anyway, reason Im posting on this thread, is I myself in 1979 was 17 years old and purchased a car at auction from the Peoples Temple, I also made front page of local newspaper and later smaller notice all the way to the New York Times, small mention AP news back page, with what I found in the trunk of that car, the PTs defense plans and a map of the compound they owned in redwood valley, ca. which included showing a tower with a .50cal. machine gun mount and what rover (guards) were to do if they came under "attack" instruction booklets. After some legal trouble over what i found, the orig items were returned to the PT lawyers, I still have copies of all but the map, anyway, thought it may be an interesting note to all this as the headline read " peoples temple Treasure found in trunk of teens car". thanks for reading all this.
