Yo! Looks like to me that this is an old "water cisten" made of "clay"; dig a hole, to a certain dept, tample the clay soil down good (may leave footprints), let sun harden the clay in hole; water cisten is used to catch rain water, for "tribes" to utilize, later. If this is one of three holes with a path to 'em, you may have found watering holes for THREE native tribes from that area. The "sign" on the rock may be a "path" that leafs to THREE "watering holes"... DUNNO. 8) (sunny out).

I disagree and stand by my original post. These were eroded by water pools over many years. I've seen them a million times.

Ya mean that to tell everyone what to see ruffled everyones feathers.
Grind holes are all over the WORLD. Not just here in the West, we had Spain mining the west for 300 years, they learned it from the Romans.

Where a flow of water could be had, a hole would be tapped into the rock. Next a hole would be ground in with pressure. Add a little ore, and continue grinding, add some more, with some water and maybe some mercury....

Oh, Wait! I haven't enslaved the population to do this work....

Modern day we use ball mills.

What you discribe is an "Arrastre"

I agree with Eric, Having seen some of these that date from the 1950s clear back to late 1690s this looks like a water eroded hole in the rock.
