That tree/rock combo is wild looking! Could that stone have been placed against the tree long ago or did the tree grow from the edge of the stone and slowly push it up like that over the years??

Is that another flat rock (but much larger) shaped just like the one you found the white stone on (other post), in the fence row? Or is this a completely new location?

no... this is a totally different place...haven't been back to other site yet...I'll give you an update when I get back there....
I was going with the the rock being placed there at first...but its about a mile out in the woods, and I can't see any good reason why someone would go thru the trouble to move it...then again I really can't see how the tree could of lifted a rock that size and grow that straight....maybe wes is right...

Great pic.

I think this is one of the coolest looking things that has been in a photo in a while rather it be from nature or started by man years ago!

I can't say what the purpose of this marker is but it definitly marks something.
The tree was cut off to prop the stone up as the tree grew it encompassed the stone.
Check out the other stones on the ground around the 'leaner' as well as the trees in the area to see if there are other marks around to give an indication of intent.

No...no hills or cliffs nearby...pretty much just rolling terrain
I see what you're refering to... but I don't believe the stump was/is capable of supporting it.....the rock itself probably stands about 6 ft tall.....I didn't check to see if the stump was cut or just rotted off.......I'll investigate futher.....thanks for the tips...

I'm ready to bet the stump is a cut off.
it doesn't take much to prop a rock up.
Once propped it will stay for ages until disturbed.
Give it a closer look and let me know what the outcome is.
(while you are there you may as well take some pix of the other side and surrounding area)
Don't forget your camera.

I don't think your rocks would be Native American rock piles. Check out this link:

In New England states, Indian rock piles were part of a ceremonial site, a sanctuary in the woods. Some piles represented effigy shapes, such as the Thunderbird. Other piles....semi-circular shaped wall, etc. Quartz often used in certain piles because considered a stone of enlightenment.
I say your rocks look more like cache markers. If you find an Indian site, it will be quite obvious...just study the Rock Piles site from the link I gave you.

Went back today…it appears the stump the rock is leaning against had indeed been cut…whether it could hold up the rock, I still have my doubts…
The general area contains many other old cut tree stumps…
I fanned out from the rock looking for other clues…After about an hour...and almost out of expletives for Old Dog…....I came upon this….approx. 50 yds away….
Further wandering led me to these rocks…approx 100 yds away(?)
Whether any of this is related, or even means anything …I have no clue…
Hopefully Old Dog can offer some more insight..or at least have a bunch more questions I can’t answer…

I just noticed something from your last photos that makes it look very Indian. It still could be a marker...but to what? I would have to take some photos of rocks here to show you why I think Indian now, no time for doing it tonight...later maybe.

As I suspected though.

I even suspect that the stone was noched to allow for the stump.
I don't think indian when I see this tree and the others you have posted.
I think that Canadian Trout is closer with his KGC guess.
These could lead you on a fun chase.

what is Obvious to me
