Gold bar found by teenage girl in German lake...
A 16-year-old holidaymaker has found a 500g (1lb) gold bar worth €16,000 (£11,500) while swimming in a lake in Germany, police say. The teenager discovered the precious metal at a depth of about 2m (6.5ft) near the shore of Bavaria's Koenigssee lake on Friday. She handed it into police who are now investigating where it came from and who owned it. Police divers checked the area for more gold on Tuesday but found nothing.
The find revived rumours of Nazi gold supposedly lost in the lake, near Germany's southern border with Austria, but reports said the find was not connected to the Nazi era. Gold bar found by teenage girl in German lake - BBC News

Why'd she give it to the police? And did someone take a grinding wheel to it? :icon_scratch:

That lake has been played out, but a random find here and there will keep people searching it for a long long time. Imagine how excited that young lady must have been at the time. I too have to wonder why the wire brush or grinder appearance on the lower section. The 999.9 inscription should have been enough evidence to suggest its authenticity. Is this a gold United States bar ? And they say it has nothing to do with the Nazi era, how long are these guys visiting our planet ?

" ah I note FROM THE LINK ABOVE that the DEGUSSA AG ---COMPANY STAMP ---IS IN FACT A GERMAN MADE GOLD BAR STAMP -- THE STAMP WAS FIRST USED IN 1980 AND LAST USED IN 2005 --SO NOT NAZI GOLD --THUS THE BAR OF GOLD WAS MADE BETWEEN 1980 AND 2005 ... SO ITS NO OLDER THAN 1980 AT BEST

AND BY THEIR LOCAL LOST AND FIND LAWS ---SHE HAD TO TURN IT IN OR BREAK THE LAW -- NOW SINCE THE ID NUMBERS GROUND OFF ---ITS HIGHLY DOUBTFUL THAT THE LEGAL OWNER CAN BE FOUND ===SO THE STATE WILL JUST STEP IN AND CLAIM IT --AND THE NICE GIRL WHO DID THE GOVT MANDATED " RIGHT THING" WILL GET A MEASLY REWARD --OF THE VALUE OF THE 20,000 IN GOLD AS A "REWARD" -- ITS 822.89 NOT EVEN 5 % FINDERS FEE--- SAD THE STATE GETS 95.9 % THE FINDER ABOUT 4.1 % "

This was from a post on another thread here from ivan salvis. So now we know the grinder marks were used to hide the identity.
