ARCHAEOLOGISTS DISCOVER 5000-YEAR OLD GOLDEN TREASURE IN BULGARIA'S DUBENE
15:28 Mon 02 Jul 2007

Archaeologists from the National History Museum (NHM) in Sofia found a 5000-year old treasure near the village of Dubene in the region of Karlovo.

Decorations are in the form of spirals made of a thin tubule of almost pure gold, Focus news agency reported.

The find was made during excavation works in small pre-historic mounds.

The spirals are the only ones of their kind among all pre-historic discoveries in Bulgaria. They were found together with eight different ceramic vessels on the bottom of a huge pit in the middle of a mound.

Archaeologists also found a rare and entirely preserved cup, NHM head Bozhidar Dimitrov said.

Excavation works continue and the expedition is expected to find more treasures in the next few days. The findings will give more information on ancient people who lived in the region.

Meanwhile, archaeologists’ claim that Bulgaria was gold artifacts production centre in ancient times are being confirmed. The team discovered more than 25 000 golden objects dating from the third millennium BC.
