Silver Treasure Found in the Kremlin of Nizhni Novgorod 13.08.2007

Archeologists working on the territory of the Nizhni Novgorod Kremlin have found a treasure of silver bars of the 12-13th cc., the total weight of them reaching three kilos.

The treasure consists of fourteen hryvnias of the so called Novgorodian type: triangle metal bars about 15 cm long and weighing about 200 gram each. They were enwrapped in birchbark tied with a strap of leather. The researches are still in for finding out the definite composition of the ancient monetary bars.

A similar find occurred in the Nizhni Novgorod Region only once - it was in the 1950s, during the diggings in Gorodets.

The Novogordian hryvnias were used in the 12-14th cc, during the so called coinless period of currency.
