My ancestors were from Holland, and were instrumental in the building of the dikes. Ancestors name was Dyk. Back then your name was what you did for a living.

I just got back from a vacation there. We spent one day in Amsterdam. The family took a canal ride, they have to pull out all the bikes that go in once or twice a year or the boats wouldn’t be able to float through. I like that website, thanks for sharing it!!

Very interesting resource, thank you for sharing!

In my quest for ancient antiquities, I lucked upon a magnificent intact Middle Bronze Age dagger with bone handle, found by a detectorist searching the soil/peat trucked outside the city from a construction project on The Rokin in Amsterdam. He thought it was medieval, but aside from the unbelievably superb condition it is obviously much older than the city. Thankfully his ignorance allowed me to buy a truly museum-quality 3,000+ year old artifact for a tiny fraction of its value. It is interesting to see the bronze spearhead with similar patina and reference to a hazelwood shaft, wouldn't mind getting one of those next heh.

I'm thinking that canal wouldn't be a very good place to hunt for old relics anymore. Pretty interesting though.
