Missing £1m treasure found in pizzeria

The missing part of a 17th century cabinet worth £1m has been found outside the toilets of a pizza restaurant in Yorkshire.

Head of Sotheby's Mario Tavella discovered the bottom half of the cabinet in an Ask pizzeria, in York, reports the Daily Telegraph.

He said: "This was a console I have been looking for the last 20 years. It's arguably the most important piece of Roman baroque furniture that has ever appeared on the market."

The cabinet belongs to the York Conservation Trust which owns the Assembly rooms where the pizzeria has been based since 2002.

It is believed to have been owned by the trust for at least half a century, having become separated from the rest of the cabinet soon after the Second World War.

The top half of the furniture, which features a picture of the Pope blessing the crowd in Rome's St Peter's Square, had been kept by Sotheby's on behalf of a client.

It had been feared that the carved wooden stand used to hold the intricate piece of furniture had been lost forever. The two pieces have now been reunited and will go up for auction in December.
