I know I have seen one of these before, heck I may have dug one, any ideas what the thing is? A little brass case with a spool of fine chain inside. I tried a patent date search but had 717 entries for that date to sort through and I can't remember an easier way to search patents by date.

Does it look like there was an attachment on the other side. I think it is a key chain. You could clip it on your belt and when you pulled on the keys the chain would unwind so you didn't have to unhook the holder to use your keys. It was spring loaded so the chain would rewind by itself. not 100% sure that's what yours is though

Not for keys, the chain couldn't take the stress... it's very fine chain. The outer "case" is about the diameter of a quarter. It is very similar to the pocket watch thingie.

[b]I found a SIMPULL on Ebay via Google, but the item had been removed, but below is a copy/paste of the listing on Google. After reading it, I'm assuming it is an Art Nouveau/Art Deco era WATCH CHAIN.
