White/gray material. Pottery? By-product of something?

In all of my travels I’ve only found stuff like this in one place. It is on a trail which crosses a dry stream bed.
There is a ton of this material.
Is it pottery? Is it the by-product of some activity at this spot in the woods?

I've been scanning my collection of Old Maps and posting them on my site.
The maps show property owner's names, mining claims, parks, schools, etc.
    Use 'em if you can!

Could it be a pocket of decomposing sandstone?

There is also a ton of this material on a slope in my backyard. I find it in a thick layer of ashes, and I find thinds that were obviously in such fires. I always thought it was some kind of byproduct of a fire bit I really don't know. I'll certainly keep my eyes on this one.

There are some small clay beds in these woods and I wonder if early Native Americans dug the clay and fired their pots at this one location.
