16 may refer to there being 16 drams to an ounce.

I thought about this but I am really having a hard time figuring out which coin weight it is exactly. I thought about an apothecary weight but the symbols do not match. Therefore, I am pretty sure it is a coin weight... but which coin??

I found a number of coin weights with XVI on them. They all refer to the James I spur ryal (gold coin). The XVI = 16 shillings. But yours does not have a crown on it. Maybe not British?
Still searching...

Thanks DCMatt. Well i think mine actually has a crown. At least what looks like it. (right side) It could also be a fleur-de-lys, fleur-de-lis or heraldic lily... sorry i don't know how you say that in English... But indeed, it is definitely not the same crown as the one on the spur ryal coin weight...
Still searching too !

Also found this on Wikipedia about James I
James VI and I (19 June 1566 – 27 March 1625) was King of Scots as James VI from 24 July 1567 and King of England and Ireland as James I from the union of the English and Scottish crowns on 24 March 1603 until his death.
It may be a little early to match my coin weight...

I have not seen another coin weight with such simple markings and nothing on the reverse. Very curious... I saw a weight called English Pistol with a fleur de lis but marked on both sides.
Do you know the exact weight of your item? That would be helpful.

Really nice coin weight Broken Knee !
The markings are similar ("V") but it's kind of logical with Roman Numbers.
The one i found that i like the most is the one i use for my avatar. It's a coin weight called "Poids de l'Agnel" which you would spell "Pois de l'Agnel" in the old days. It dates back to the beginning of the 14th century and was used to weigh the "Agneau d'Or" or "Golden Lamb". I found it in France. It also has nothing on the reverse by the way.
Coming back to this specific coin weight, it's getting hard to clearly identify it. It seems that DCMatt and I are looking at the same places but indeed having it weighed would help. I will try to do so as soon as i can. Do you think they would weigh it for me at the post office? I tried the automatic machine there but it was just not precise enough.
Thanks for your help guys. I really appreciate !
