Any Guess at time period? Navy Button

This button comes from a house site that normally produces civil war period artifacts, However I get the feeling that this one is much later. Any guesses on age, Back is missing or was never there.

Can we see the back, is it brass, what is the thickness?
Without a back, my feeling is that it's civilian.
