I had an unbelievable hunt this evening. Any one of the 1787 CT Copper, US Bit Boss, UNBELIEVABLE condition 1827 US Large Cent, Toasted KG II, Civil War Infantry cuff button, OR Shoe buckle frame would have stood on their own and made my hunt.

I hit 4 firsts today:

First State copper
First Civil War Infantry Button
First US Bit Boss
First KG II

This site has been producing finds from the early 1700's, until the mid to late 1800's. In the past I have dug two KG I's and a KG III there... now the KG II tonight. In the bottom left of the stool is a small bone and next to that is a HUGE Claw! I thought it was a K-9 tooth at first, but on the other side it appears to be a large claw. I'll be putting some of the iron through electrolysis. The hook is hand forged and will look great all cleaned up.

Hands down, the best condition Large Cent I have ever dug. This thing came from the mint, and went right into the ground! I am unsure if I want to remove the rest of the dirt. It has an amazing green patina and I really enjoy the contrast between the green and the dirt still on it.
IMG_20150624_221338925.jpg IMG_20150624_221354984.jpg

1787 Connecticut State Copper! I thought this was a KG II when it came out and I tossed it between cotton balls in a film canister. An hour later I stopped for some water and decided to pull it back out.... I could tell it was a pretty solid coin, so I made a field toothpick with a piece of cut dry grass and revealed "Connec" and fired off an email to Bill D. He got back to me and verified I indeed had just dug my first state copper... Connecticut. SO AWESOME!
IMG_20150624_221405675.jpg IMG_20150624_221415166.jpg

Its toasty, but it has enough to identify... Its a KGII and I was hoping for a date, but its a little too far gone.
IMG_20150624_221430621_HDR.jpg IMG_20150624_221440337_HDR.jpg

And the dirty pictures for those that like them!

This was my first signal of the day and really set the tone for this hunt. It looked amazing, so I snapped a few pictures and wrapped it in a paper towel. It was about 10 inches deep and after getting it home and cleaning it, I see that I made a small nick in the front with my digger. :BangHead:
IMG_20150624_150945908.jpg

That iron was TOTALLY masking this LC. It was a crappy high iron signal and I started pulling out pieces of sheet iron. Typically my machine locks onto LC's, but I never heard this one at all. After clearing out most of the iron, my pin pointer was telling me there was one more thing in there. I couldnt believe it when I pulled this one out... Totally lucky, since it wasnt a good signal... when I get bad signals I try to tell myself "I'm here to dig" and sometimes I end up with a surprise.

IMG_20150624_175558839_HDR.jpg

So this is my first actual Civil War button! I have dug hand fulls of flat buttons... US Box Plate, US Breast Plate, US Bit Boss (an hour before this button. ha), Civil War Bullets, Canister Shot... but never a button. When I saw this little cuff button come out I was more than excited.
IMG_20150624_161424031.jpg IMG_20150624_161430564.jpg

I've been dying to dig a complete shoe buckle and I had a feeling this site had one... just not today. I checked all over for the rest of it...
IMG_20150624_162042768_HDR.jpg

Any clue what this is? Its in the center right of the stool pictures. Will take some closeup pictures and get it in its own thread.

Came across this cool snake skeleton... picked clean.

Man! That is one heck of a hunt!! Three coppers in a day, I can't even get one copper in a week anymore!! I love how that 1827 LC looks, dropped on it's way out of the mint. Congrats, I bet that the find of a life time is going to pop up any minute now at that site!

Thanks man! Every find at this place is a find of a lifetime for me. haha Before this site, my oldest coin was a dateless draped bust LC and my oldest silver was Barber. I had dug lots of LC's and Indians, but colonial copper and silver I still dreamed of. I keep leaving this place saying "there is no way I can have another hunt like that one" and then somehow, weeks later, I return and pull it off. Its produced a Bust Half in a silver spill, US Box plate, other CW relics, 5 KG's, 3 LC's, CT Copper, 1722 cut pistareen, 1 reale, 2 reale, lots of buttons, some of the best iron I've dug and just tons more. I joke that this site has ruined metal detecting for me, but I'm half serious... I am addicted to this old stuff now and there is no way I can go back to digging wheats!

Looked over the die varieties and you have a Newcome-1. Common, but a very nice example. Hogge

Thank you! I was just thinking and I can remember 5 times now at this site that it was an all iron signal before I removed the plug and it turned into something great. Some of the iron turns out to be great anyway... its just back breaking to dig it all and then pack it out. But I was rewarded with the two stirrups in my avatar there as well as a canister shot and lots of hoes and axe heads and iron buckles. They all display nice.... and every now and then the iron signal disappears and you get those killer signals!

WOW-You really racked!

Thank you. I left it all on the stool in my office until this morning. Even though I had the pictures taken, I sat there and stared at it all for a while. ha

Thanks a ton Hogge! I PM'ed Don in SJ and he replied back and said the same thing. You two know your stuff and both agreed, so its gotta be it. I tried to look at them on coinfacts and they all looked the same to me. haha You guys are great at figuring those things out. Don said the CT was too far gone but its "one of the 33 series", there just isnt enough left to tell. Thank you Hogge and Don... I really appreciate it.

Great hunt and post Brad! Recovering that many firsts in a single hunt is quite a feat, and will be hard to top. But I guess you never know what's next at that very interesting and productive site of yours. Hope you can get back soon and continue your run of good fortune.

Thank you Bill! I've learned a lot in the last few months from you and the finds at this site. It's given me a taste of what its like to find colonial artifacts and its so much fun. I found that KGII in an area I have not spent much time before which broadens the search radius even more. I was certain it was a silver with how well it was reading!

I also noticed that the folded spoon has a cool rose pattern on the back. It seems folded on purpose, which makes me wonder if something is sandwiched inside! I know ill destroy it trying to unfold it... and if I anneal it to unfold it and something is inside, I'll destroy that!

Thank you Stuphin! I think I'll put it in boiling HP right now and get all that dirt out of the inside... most likely thats all there is, but always fun to dream.

You realize that you do reach a point where we no longer deem it as a good hunt and define it as just plain showing off....... kidding of coarse. Killer hunt brother. Tell the truth...... your cheeks are hurting from grinning. Congrats and HH

Site dependent of course, but this site is worth it. Blindly digging up "junk" has paid off many times here. Discovering a repeatable high tone after removing some iron from a hole is just as exciting as removing the target to me. I have many sites where digging junk would just lead me to more junk! ha

Hahahaha... then it wouldn't be right for me to tell you that I found so much, I actually forgot all the keepers I had wrapped up. So when I got home to clean stuff up I was like "oh damn... I forgot about this shoe buckle" hahaha That sort of thing has happened a couple times at this place. My avatar picture (its in another post on here) was one of those hunts at this place that, at the end if the day, I had forgotten all the stuff I had wrapped up. I have yet to top that day. I'm hoping it will never end, but know it will... at least in the meantime I can share with you all and give back some of the motivation I get from the stuff you all find.
