Friday, my and one of my diggin’ buddies hit a old area in southern Massachusetts with 5 or 6 cellar holes long forgotten. There is a story about two childhood friends who joined a yankee sharp shooters unit together during the civil war. One of them was shot through the jaw at Fredericksburg and died of his wounds several days later. The other went on to fight at Gettysburg, the Wilderness and was captured at the battle of Spotsylvannia court house, he died later that year in Andersonville. In the article I have from the 1920’s it says they were members of the 1st US sharpshooters, but I’ll research his name to see if that’s accurate. Anyway, I had found a small two piece cuff button I couldn’t immediately ID, but after I did, it got me thinking there maybe be a like to these two young men who died during the war. I’ll update this post if I can get any better information.

Interesting story and a very nice button. Bet there are more things to be found near those cellar holes. Congrats.

So I got the names and ran them through the soldiers and sailors govt site, and the article was accurate, both men were attached to the 15th Massachusetts infantry regiment, but both were officially part of the US 1st sharpshooters. My buddy has detected one of the guys houses that still stands today and goes back to 1748, he found a variety of things there including sharps rifle casings. I’m waiting on more names of people whom occupied those houses ( cellar holes) to see if I can put one of them in a Connecticut unit.
