Only had time for a short hunt this morning so I went to a Union camp that I have been to many times. It is still producing. Had a great hunt! Found three round balls, a Prussian bullet, camp lead, one big and one small eagle I buttons, and the back to a two pc button. Also found what I think is the swivel to a gun sling and the hammer off of a gun. Might be from a pistol, it seems small. I'm not sure about these two so I would love your opinions. If need be I will post in what is it for ID. Thanks for looking.

Great finds!!! I think that is part of a sling buckle and a pistol hammer. You need to hit that spot hard...d2

Thanks bud, I agree the old relics really turn me on. They won't last much longer. I like to think that everyone we find is history saved.

I don't think its a match. The picture is of a Colt "Peacemaker"... first in use in 1873. It looks more like a hammer from a Colt 1851 Navy, 1860 Army or similar percussion revolver to me.

Notice that the thumbpiece is more "swept" back on a Colt PM'er, as compared to more straight up on the earlier percussion pieces... as well as the contour/length difference of the forward portion.

Great finds by the way! My wife wouldn't see me for a few days if I came on a camp that produced constantly like that.

I see what your saying, I was looking mostly at the bottom of the hammer and was excited that it was a pistol hammer. Jumped the gun.. Thanks

I would sure be excited too. Gun parts are some of the best finds, IMO. I personally would rather it be a hammer from a percussion model, which would tie it directly to the CW camp. If it was a PM'er (AKA Single Action Army model of 73') hammer... that would mean it was lost by a later visitor to the camp, and then I would always be wondering what great finds they walked away with (or destroyed)!
Years ago I knew a very elderly rancher here in AZ, who told me about going to several of the abandoned stage stations in remote areas to pick up scrap metal for the war effort during WWI. Being kids, they would grab any metal worth taking, but then break all the old bottles, shoot up things, etc, not realizing they were destroying history. I imagine after the CW many camps were treated similarly for decades, before nature reclaimed and hid them, or they got plowed under.

You have a great spot there, and I would not be surprised if you found more pieces to that particular gun. Hope to see more great finds.
