Found this belt buckle at the old Alabama State Capitol Grounds in Tuscaloosa last week while hunting for a cousin's lost earring. It says: UNIVERSITY on the top and ALABAMA on the bottom. No "OF" in the middle. The image in the center is the United States of America Great Seal Eagle with the olive branch in the right claw and three arrows in the left claw. I cannot make out any other lettering. The Lady in the middle is on a shield and looks like the Lady of the University of Alabama Seal... The current University of Alabama R.O.T.C. officer wrote " That is a corps of Cadets buckle, but I do not know any of its story. It was used as a model for the current buckle we give to each officer as they commission from UA ROTC."

The back of my buckle looks like those around C1900. How do I find out when U of A started R.O.T.C. training, when thy started giving out buckles and the date of this buckle? My old buckle appears to be brass. The current buckle is a silver color...

Nice find. I have no particular knowledge that gives my opinion any credibility, but I'd guess age on this at less than 50 years.

Lucky you. I'd get sent to jail for getting on capital grounds here.
