Any ;arge cent experts on board?

I started picking up some large cents a few months ago. I picked up an 1850 and looking at the date and comparing it with others it looks to me like the 1 in this date is taller than pther 1850's and other years for that matter, the 1 almost touches the denticles and the head. Anyone else see this or am I imagining things?? Have a look

I see what you mean and I believe that the "1" is quite a bit larger! Many of the 1850 Large Cents actually have a slightly larger "1" in the Date but most are no that big. I have researched the coin but cannot find a Newcomb Variety that matches. If I get more time, I will do some more research. There were 28 Newcomb Varities listed for the 1850 Large Cent but Newcomb's 8, 10 and 16 have been delisted, probably because they were an earlier or later Die State of another Newcomb Variety. So, that leaves you with 25 possible Newcomb Varieties to search through. If it does not match any on the known Varieties, then you might just have a new Variety but it doubtful! Thanks for the effort Frank, I did look at some of the varieties on NGC but it doesn't give much information, I doubt its a new variety but you never know I guess. Oh well, we will continue the hunt. Thanks again Rich
