After my last weeks test pit I tried again with a bigger pit - 1.5 metres square. Although I had some pottery it was pretty much a blank for Roman features.
My mate dug a pit nearer the house & for awhile his 2 kids helped with the digging & finding. After they left their pit I filled mine back in & carried on where they left of - it looked more promising. As luck would have it, I came down on the corner of a Roman rubbish pit. This has been my most successful dig & never have I had such wholes pieces of Roman Pot.
I love the Roman Wine Jug.:headbang:

Wow that wine jug is beautiful. Must be extremely rare to find pieces that big. Did you think for a minute that it may be whole? Imagine that

SHhhhhhhh,,
Or they will and come and take it.

Just kidding guys, but if this was found in your back yard,, do you still have to "report" if to the authorities?

Personally I think it is cool they are logging everything but without those doing the actual work,,, nothing would ever be found.

I love history,,thanks for taking the time to share your finds

Great recovery. The Greyware with pattern on is really interesting. Hoping that you maybe able to pull out some better pieces of Samian than you have already. A nice decorated piece would be cool. Are those wild boar tusks top left of picture 3 ? How would you class the location of the pit, urban or rural?

Now you know why I'm always so excited to dig early pits. Much more fun than detecting. That is an awesome Roman specimen, particularly with the spout and handle intact. Did you finish digging that spot, or are you going back? Very exciting dig - congrats!!

I think it broke before they chucked it, I couldn't find anymore of it.

None of this is reportable under the Law. Some of it I may display in the local Museum.
