When I was a cub scout I remember we'd have a jamboree of sorts inside at a local gymnasium and have a turtle race. There'd be a big tub full of painted turtles and you reached in and pick one out. You would place them in the center of a big ringed circle pointing their heads toward the outer perimeter and on the mark get set go, you let go of your turtle. Some would just sit there looking around, one might take off in a dash and then just stop. But one or two might take off the head out and keep trucking all the way. I can still remember us all yelling and rooting are turtles to go. Most the turtles I think just didn't want to move, because of all the cheering going on. I do remember mine never won and that was a bit disappointing at that age. Afterwards the turtles were all taken out to a little lake and set free.
