Biotite, shungite, or obsedian

Not sure what type of stone/gem this is. Found an abundance while landscaping. Sorry I'm new to this and trying to get as knowledgeable with this as possible. Rock finding has become a hobby of my wife and myself. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

It looks like industrial slag. Very common in the Northwest.

If it's light weight it could be anthracite coal. Was it found near an old coal bin or furnace?

There is no natural obsidian in New York or anywhere else on the east coast.

Without more information I think it is as Clay says, it's Anthracite coal.
Being from hard-coal county I've seen those type of fractures on black, light weight rocks so many times.

Yes, I agree, this find is not shungite. However, recently, everyone is trying to pass off anthracite coal for shungite. They even invented a name for it: Colombian Shungite. This is a big hoax really. However, there are people who are not indifferent and they are trying to expose this hysteria with anthracite, which is passed off as shungite.

It's slag glass. Found a pile of it too and thought it was cool. Just industrial waste though lol.
