Breakin' into the 1800s in a BIG Way

Went out hunting with a buddy to a place that had produced a Merc in the past but really not much more. On the way there, he was giving me a hard time about not having broke into the 1800s yet. It's true, at the time my earliest coin was a 1906 Barber quarter.

The hunting was really tough and we didn't have any coins between us for the first 4 hours (maybe more) that we were there. After a while we broke off and went our separate ways. My way required a bit if bushwackin' but I'm pretty happy I pushed through the brush because about an hour later I had my first 1800s coin: an 1870-s Seated Half!!

I am still shaking from it and for about half-hour after I found it I was kinda detecting in aimless circles because I couldn't keep my mind off that coin.

Anyway, thanks for looking!

G

Great find Greg. I can picture what you mean about being distracted after that find. I'd be eager to get home with it.

That is really terrific! Would you mind saying whether you found it along a trail or around a place where people used to live? I have thought many times that just searching in the woods could turn something up, but when I have, it has been a waste of time with no targets found. So I was just wondering if your find should have been expected or was it just a fluke?

Thanks USA,

The coin was about 10 feet off of a trail in a very small flat area. I had been following the trail and getting a lot of old ammo hits (shotgun shells, bullet casings, and bullets). I am not sure why, but I diverted from the trail at the exact right time and hit the half almost immediately (lucky I guess). The area was inhabited in the past. We actually went to that site because of a big cellar hole there, but I found the coin about a 1/2 mile away from there (after finding nothing at the cellar hole). I heard that the area was once a big hunting area, which explains all the ammo. To answer your last question, I think it was still a fluke -- even though the area was a homestead in the past, the half was the only coin we found all day. I had gotten a Merc there before and had heard of someone else getting a couple of Buffalos, but nothing close to the age of the half.

Hope that helps.

If I had to hunt all day and only find one coin, that would be worth it! Congrats!

BD: I sure hope so! Unfortunately, I'm paying the price for it with a bit of poison oak, but I'd do it all over again just the same.

Bryan: I am certainly happy with my single coin for the day's work.

Just wanted to add some better photos....

Holy smokes! Yes, that would have made my year. I'm still happy with my S, though.
