Crazy Civil War token

I found this today at a 1940's homesite along with a Missouri tax token that I found without a detector in a bottle dump near the site. I didn't know what the Civil War token was until I got home to research it. I found out they were minted privately from 1861-1864 in the Union because of a penny shortage, and were used as currency in war times. This was made illegal by the government in April of 1864. The tokens typically were patriotic or were used for advertising. Mine is a patriotic token. The back of the token is toast, and is covered in green crust. If anyone can give any tips on how I could clean it without damaging the token, I would really appreciate it. Thanks for looking and happy hunting!

Sorry for the sideways picture, here's a better pic of the token.

What a cool and unique find! I've never seen one. The front is gorgeous. Too bad the back is rough. I would use a dry toothpick and see how much crud "pops" off. That's what I do with buttons anyway . . .

Thanks! I will try cleaning the back with a toothpick tommarow, and will post a picture if I can see any details.
