I headed out yesterday with a mission to grid small areas. I chose a 20' x 20' area I recovered a Revolutionary War era stirrup recently, and dug everything. Well I got three good recoveries and two crusty coppers. I knew by the readout that they were British (12-41 for the KG1 and 12-39 for the KG2) but also knew they were badly leeched from 250 years in bad dirt

The weight of the KG2 is much lighter and I'm positive it's a counterfeit.

Well you can't choose your targets nor the condition but alas that's what keeps us coming back.
KG1-

KG2

And what I think may be a Fleur de Lis saddle adornment with an obvious federal design. Civ?

Enjoy the New Year everyone

Danged Scrappy, you're still killing it! You're becoming my hero!
Lol. The only a hero I am is to roached coppers! Lol. Thx man
The Boy Scout emblem is still a good find, & it may have some value-check ebay. Great job with the coins too!

It's a cool pin. The emblem got right by me and I failed to see the pin mounting marks. Thx for looking

Congrats on digging those crusty keepers Steve. I also agree about that other find being BSA related. Looking forward to your future posts.

ThNks for looking Loco. Delaware in the Spring? Either way, here's to 2015 being a good year for both of us. I hope my future posts stay entertaining;)

They are crusty, but at least you can tell the bust direction! Smooth crusty coppers are the worst... there is 10 seconds of excitement when you see the green disk in the dirt, then a total let down when you realize you cant even tell what it was. ha So I'm always happy to at least see a bust on them. Awesome job digging all those signals in a small area. Its crazy whats down there that gets missed.

Totally know that feeling. I've dug almost a dozen blanks this year. Most of the time you know right away like you said...but that first 10 seconds - whhoooo whatta Rush!!
Lol

Scrappy, your right...can't control condition.
Yes as you mention I think we did have this (condition) conversation before, if so I must have said that at least half of mine (coppers) were blanks, so any detail is a bonus...

HAPPY NEW YEAR !

The scout piece is a great addition to your collection.

You keep pumping them out Steve, and adding to your yearly totals which have become mind-boggling. Wish I could say the same. Good luck to you in '16.

Great save on the early KG II's Steve, you found them and saved them for all of us to now enjoy! :occasion14:

The Boy Scout pin is a cool find too, very early!

Dave

Thanks Dave. It's good to hear these coins are being enjoyed in all of their crustiness. Our finds have looks only a digger would love. Lol

I am going to have to try your approach on digging everything in a very small grid at a few sites. It definitely worked for you. I like old coppers crusty, smooth, some detail or lots of detail...I just like old coppers:icon_thumright:

Thanks Bill. It was a good year and for Bill D to use the phrase mind-boggling is mind-boggling in itself! Lol.

We always wish for what we don't find and I must say I wish I found less coppers and more cut silver. I can't remember if you told me this or if it was in one of your articles, but I believe you said less copper circulated in Va (and the south) vs. up North?

I've found only whole Spanish silvers and cobs and not a single one cut.

Cheers and Happy New Year Bill! I hope you have a stellar 2016!!!!

Steve

Small area gridding while digging everything is a great way to renew spots Dave. George told me to try it in a beat spot a while ago and I snagged some great stuff. I went again today and have a remarkable find I'll post later. It's OLD and came up at a signal I would never have expected.
Great job Scrappy!

Thanks for looking, Happy New Year and I wish you many great finds in 2016!

Heck yes. I display them all too. So when people come over and say "what the hell is that!", I give it to them and watch the pour over it for a good 20 minutes. Lol
