Where are you located in VA?
The central Virginia gold prospector club (CVGP) is a good place to start. There first meeting of the year will be in mid February. They have a number of properties that you can dredge and high bank on and some that are shovels and sluices only. Cost $100 to join and have access to all the properties.
Contrary creek in Louisa county is a good spot to go that is open to the public. Just keep your feet wet and walk in from the parking area and you shouldn't have any issues. You'll also run into lots of other helpful prospectors there. Just last year someone found a half ounce nugget there. And that is where my first three nuggets came from.
