Dug a octagon token from Oceanside Cal Wm Goldbaum Good for 5 cents drinks

I dug this today in New Mexico at a zoo that was founded in 1898 close to where the original entrance used to be. I can find a round token with the same name but, not an octagon shape. It looks like brass and is half as thick as a penny. If someone has some input on Ca. tokens I'd be most appreciative. Thanks.

Often merchants (especially in dimly-lit businesses like this saloon) would have their different denominations made in different shapes so it would be easier to tell them apart. The one on tokencatalog is 10¢ and is round. If you can get better photos (maybe side lighting?), post yours on tokencatalog. The CA catalogers will see it there.

Great token, sometimes that crust is a nightmare and better to leave it. Its nice to imagine what was going on back then, sounds like you have a great spot.

Some history:
Simon Goldbaum - a native of Grabow, Prussia, came to America and resided a number of years in New York. In September 1868 he sailed via Panama to San Francisco, the trip taking 60 days. In 1871 he came to San Luis Rey, California and engaged in general merchandise and fruit and stock farming. William Goldbaum,your guy, was born 12 July 1855 Grabow, Prussia. In 1877 William came to San Luis Rey, California. He was a clerk in Simon's Oceanside store and in 1887 bought him out.
San Luis Rey is a small part of Oceanside. The main highway through San Luis Rey (back in the day) was Mission Avenue. Odds favor the Goldbaum store was on Mission Ave. in the San Luis Rey area of Oceanside.

I drove to the Oceanside Historical Society and asked about the Goldbaums in San Luis Rey/Oceanside. The historian looked up an article that showed the store was in business between 1870 (by Simon) and closed in February of 1920, when Wm. may have been still there. Another brother, Max was also part of the ownership.
I mentioned above the store was most likely on Mission Ave, an east-west street. Another article mentioned the store was on the main route from LAX to San Diego (north-south) and that would have been El Camino Real. The cross streets of Mission Ave and ECR correspond to being in San Luis Rey, so that matched.

Since your token reads 'Oceanside' the earliest date for your token would be 1888; the year Oceanside was incorporated.
BTW, the phone for Heritage Park and Musuem is 760-435-4500.

I just got back yesterday from visiting my sister in NM. Looks like I should have gone detecting with you instead! I love local tokens!
